The BaZi Calculator computes your Chinese Four Pillars of Destiny, a system of Chinese metaphysics that encodes your birth moment into four pairs of characters representing the year, month, day, and hour. Each pillar combines one of the ten Heavenly Stems with one of the twelve Earthly Branches, and together these eight characters — ba zi literally means eight characters — form a map of your innate nature and life path.

The calculation rests on the Chinese solar calendar and the cycle of the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) in their yin and yang forms. The Day Master, the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar, represents you, and the balance or imbalance of elements around it reveals strengths, weaknesses, and the elements you may want to strengthen or temper. Branches also carry the twelve Chinese zodiac animals that many people recognize.

Practitioners use BaZi for character analysis, career and relationship guidance, and timing through luck pillars and annual cycles. It is a cornerstone of Chinese astrology alongside tools like the Feng Shui Kua Number and the Chinese Lunar Calendar, and many enthusiasts cross-reference all three when making important decisions.

For an accurate reading, provide your exact birth date, time, and ideally birth location, since the hour pillar depends on the time and the year pillar is tied to the solar terms rather than the Western calendar new year. A birthday in late January or early February especially needs careful handling because the BaZi year changes at the solar term Lichun, not on January 1.
